Liberals and Greens support voluntary action changes

In recent weeks both the Liberal Party and the Greens have proposed amendments that would take into account voluntary climate abatement measures as part of the CPRS.

The Greens have included the following measures in their Safe Climate Bill, which they say:

Ensures that voluntary action by governments, groups or individuals is encouraged by subtracting total voluntary emissions reductions in each year from the following year’s target.

The Liberals, meanwhile, announced last weekend a number of proposed amnemdents to the CPRS, including the following:

Energy Efficiency and Voluntary Action

The Coalition will negotiate for a national “white certificate” energy efficiency scheme so households and businesses earn credits for efficiency measures, and contribute to reducing national emissions.

Likewise, the Coalition supports creation of a voluntary offset market in advance of the introduction of the CPRS, and amending the CPRS to ensure voluntary abatement leads to a lower national level of emissions.

The government and opposition will be negotiating over the CPRS in coming weeks before the scheme comes back for another vote in November.

Over the next few weeks, before the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is voted upon in late November, we’ll be using this website to gather comments from Australians concerned about the effects of the CPRS on voluntary climate action to pass on to federal politicians.
